The Invalid - by Pamela Gibson

My mother was ill for years
and years. It started in a small way
when I was twelve, and stayed home
for several days to look after her.

From that time on whenever
I was late for school, sometimes
even too late for Assembly,
I'd arrive, not guiltily,

but with a sad and careworn face.
The teacher would ask how
my dear mother was that day.
My reply was seldom optimistic.

I'm happy to say my mother enjoys
life to the full. She doesn't know
that she was a famous invalid, until
that sudden recovery the day I left school.





Apparently my brain cells are not working, I cannot understand this at all. Anyone who is able to this please tag and explain.
